Vivarium Soil Amendment
Our Horticultural Charcoal is comprised of 100% organic hardwood lump charcoal.
It's the perfect vivarium soil amendment as it helps rid habitats of harmful bacteria, fungus and odors. It lightens and aerates soil increasing oxygen for healthier plants and increases living space for microfauna. Its high surface area and porosity retains soil nutrients, beneficial microorganisms and enhances soil drainage. It can also be used as thin layer above the vivarium drainage layer.
Springtail Breeding Substrate
Horticultural Charcoal is the substrate we use to breed our springtails. It provides the high surface area, carbon rich, organic medium necessary to perpetuate springtail breeding and promotes denser springtail colonies. White springtails are an easy contrast against the black charcoal making it easier to measure cultures breeding progress. Springtails are also easily harvested from charcoal substrate. Simply add water to culture and pour springtails directly into desired habitat.

"Hold For Pickup" is a USPS special service that delivers the package directly to your post office for pickup. You must physically go to the post office to retrieve your package. There is no additional charge for this service.
How-To-Care Guide
VIVARIUM SOIL AMENDMENT: Use a 10:1 Ratio (10 parts soil to 1 part charcoal) when mixed with soil. It can also be used as a thin layer above the vivarium drainage layer.
SPRINGTAIL BREEDING SUBSTRATE:
Our charcoal has been baked and rinsed prior to shipping so it's ready for use once received. Place a 3" layer of charcoal in desired breeding container and add approximately 2" of
dechlorinated
water. Sprinkle top layer of charcoal with yeast, boiled brown rice or Critters Direct Springtail and Isopod Food. Add springtails and place lid on container. Keep breeding container out of direct sunlight at room temp. Check culture food once a week. Add more food ONLY when previous feeding has been completely devoured.
