How-To Care Guide
Our Isopods
We culture our isopods in a warm, moist mixture of
sphagnum
peat moss and oak leaves/bark. They're raised on a diet of fresh vegetables, high protein fish flakes, and the rich organic substrate in which they are bred. Our isopods are harvested and packaged the same day they are shipped so as to guarantee a healthy live arrival. Once harvested, isopods are placed in an 8 or 16 oz. deli container filled with moist paper towel.
Porcellio, laevis (Dairy Cow) Isopods
Porcellio, laevis (Dairy Cow) isopods are a great addition to your terrarium/vivarium ecosystem as they serve multiple functions. First, they clean their environment by consuming leaf litter, animal feces, and dead plant matter. Second, their waste is a valuable source of nutrients for your plants. And third, they're primarily surface dwellers, extremely active and tons of fun to watch.
Dairy Cows are both hardy and prolific once established. They're also one of the larger isopod available today ranging in size from 1/2" to 3/4". They're fantastic substrate aerators and make live animal husbandry easier. They play an important function as soil nutrient cyclers while providing a secondary source of high calcium food for certain (larger) pets. Dairy Cows are omnivores and have a voracious appetite for decaying vegetation and the high protein found in animal fesses. They're safe to add to any reptile, amphibian, arachnid, or snake habitat as they will not harm or affect the behavior of the animal in any way. Given their size, most dart frogs are unable to consume them which make them a great choice for dart frog
vivarium's
. Generally speaking, Dairy Cows are simply good pets.
As a general rule of thumb, one (1) Dairy Cow per gallon habitat works best to establish a productive cleanup crew.

How-To-Care Guide
Isopod Cultures:
Our cultures are packaged in an 8 and 16 oz. deli container and moist paper towel
Your isopod colony will reproduce in perpetuity if properly maintained
Simply empty deli container into desired habitat and allow isopods to move freely from paper towel to habitat at their leisure
Keep habitat at room temp (72-85 F)
The higher the temp the faster they will procreate (mid-80s is optimal)
Keep habitat moist, misting with dechlorinated water as needed
Keep habitat aerated
Maintain high humidity (80-90% is optimal)
FOOD: In mature habitats with plenty of decaying plant matter + animal
inhabitants
no additional food is required.
FOOD: In habitats with insufficient decaying plant/animal matter to sustain isopods place small vegetable (carrot, squash, zucchini ...) and fish flakes/pellets in habitat once a week. Monitor added food and remove any food that has not been completely devoured. Be careful not to overfeed.
