Duckweed Overview

  • Duckweed is a heavy water oxygenator, extremely fast growing, and feeds on waste and pollutants in the water
  • It's a key element of your biological filtration system
  • Duckweed reduces or eliminates the need for water changes
  • It's rich in protein (nearly 50%) and considered a super-food for fish, fry, loi, turtles, poultry, ducks, and livestock
  • It's a natural water purifier as it feeds on nitrates
  • Duckweed helps retain heat and reduces water evaporation
  • It defuses light and prevents algae growth
  • The duckweed plant:
  • Has 1, 2 or 3 leaves each with a single root hanging in the water
  • As more leaves grow the plant divides into new individual plants
  • Plant toot is 1-2 cm long
  • Leaves are green, oval, and 1-8 mm long
  • Growing duckweed:
  • Place duckweed in non-chlorinated water with pH between 5.5 and 7.0
  • Duckweed requires 6-8 hours of light (sun or florescent) per day
  • If placed with fish, duckweed requires no additional fertilizer
